3D Cake with DMC Embellishment - part three

I received permission from DMC, and now I can share the rest of the DMC Memory Thread lesson with you. Get your notepad ready...

During the 3D Cake Embellishment class, I showed the students some wonderfully stitched needlepoint pieces with applied DMC Memory Thread. Everyone was getting comfortable working with it... now was the time to introduce places to use it.

Are you intimidated about where to put the DMC Memory Thread? Here's what I did: make a color paper copy of the painted canvas and get a Sharpie pen. Then, draw lines on your paper indicating possible locations for the DMC Memory Thread.

Plan your pathways with a Sharpie on paper, first.

You can use DMC Memory Thread to outline an area. You can use it as a structure for needleweaving or stumpwork. You can make a 3D design element. You can use it to show movement. It is so versatile. And, there are 28 colors.

Fan Peddler by Labors of Love / LL 270C

Alice Okon, a wonderful designer from DMC, stitched the Fan Peddler from Labors of Love (LL 270C). Her applications were exciting. Just look at all the ways she added DMC Memory Thread to the needlepoint.

3D Cake with DMC Embellishment - part two

Sorry to be away so long from the Blog. Since I've been back from TNNA/ Phoenix, I have been working on projects which were shouting my name. Does that ever happen to you? Basking in the warm fuzzy aura of a "job well done" and then life pinches you back into reality. Oh well...

Since this is "mostly" a needlepoint blog, thought I would share the conclusion of the DMC Memory Thread on the 3D Cake from Associated Talents (CD 1200). I had to teach the lesson first to the TNNA students/shop owners. Here's the link to the earlier blog posting. Now that that's done, it is time to share my learned knowledge with you.

The DMC Memory Thread decorated and frosted the cake in 3D style. I used White, Pink, Green for the Flowers/Leaves and Frosting details. I used Gold for the Cake Stand. I followed the design originated by design artist, Alice Okon from DMC, and gave it my own spin, too.

Here are some of the things I learned while working with DMC Memory Thread:

Use a working length of DMC Memory Thread longer than the intended final length. You will want to have "legs" at both ends which will plunge through to the backside of the canvas to be secured.
Pre-shape the DMC Memory Thread before attaching to the canvas.
Use an awl, laying tool or trolley needle to gently open the canvas hole. Have some tweezers handy to grab onto the plunged end.
Do not try to insert the DMC Memory Thread into a needle for plunging purposes.
Pink Hair Dresser's Tape (or any other kind of low-tack tape) is good to use keeping working legs out of the way prior to securing to the backside of the canvas.
Have someone apply pressure to the surface of the shaped design while you are making the initial securing steps to the back of the canvas. This will help keep the design from losing its shape.
You can successfully apply DMC Memory Thread on top of open canvas work. Just be mindful and mirror the design pathway when securing it to the backside of the canvas.

Here is what the backside looked like as I was designing with the DMC Memory Thread. I placed each element onto the canvas, and then taped it to the backside with Pink Hair Dresser's Tape to keep it out of the way.

Once I was pleased with the arrangement, I removed the tape and began securing the DMC Memory Thread ends.

DMC Memory Thread 6050 White was used for each of the different Cake Tier Frosting Decorations. The bottom Cake Tier was 2 pieces: twisted together and attached to represent the Cable Decoration. The middle Cake Tier was 1 piece: bent into a squiggle design using your fingers; maintaining all segments to be the same height. Tweezers were used to gently pinch the segments together. The top Cake Tier was 1 piece: tied in consecutive Knots. Each Frosting Decoration was placed and tested for best shape before they were permanently attached to the canvas using 1 strand DMC Floss 3865.

Here is a collection of some of the different shapes used with the DMC Memory Thread. Notice their long "legs" were helpful used for placement and securing to the canvas.

Currently, there are 28 colors. DMC also has a handy chart on their website for selecting the DMC Floss used for couching the Memory Thread in place.

The main thing I learned was to play with and have fun with the DMC Memory Thread. It is a wonderful product. Great for giving your needlepoint a fun 3D effect. I've been told my stitch guide will be available on the DMC website, too. Sweet!

Monday was the last day of Market. Here are more canvases & bling which caught my eye.

Sparkles from Sundance Designs

In the Sundance Designs booth, there is a new product called Sparkles. It is a tubular metallic mesh which has wonderful design and shaping possibilities. Nice assortment of colors, too. I can't wait to work with it.

Also, in the Sundance Designs booth were the Sculptural Pumpkin Sampler and Sculptural Christmas Tree Sampler designed by Barbara Elmore. So clever... so creative... so Barbara! The Pumpkin has 6 canvas sections; the Christmas Tree has 8 canvas sections. Each canvas section is small and portable; just perfect for stitching at home or when you are on the go. There is a stitch guide for each by Barbara Elmore. I love these 3D sculptures!

TNNA / Phoenix - day two

Hi Everybody... Robin here... in Phoenix.

Saturday was the first day of Market. What an exciting day. Right before 10AM, all of the Shop Owners were collected in the gathering/holding area; dignitaries were present for the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. There was anticipation... a buzz in the room for the Shop Owners to show up. Show up and shop... they did! Katy bar the door! The Winter Market 2012 was open for business.

Wearing my purple apron in the NeedleDeeva booth, I saw familiar faces and met new faces, too. I wrote down orders and pointed out: What's New and upcoming in the NeedleDeeva booth. How exciting!

Lisa & Emily from Nashville Needleworks brought a wonderful model to display in the NeedleDeeva booth. It was a show stopper... and the show had only been open for 35 minutes! Look how awesome the NeedleDeeva canvas looks on the bag. Contact Nashville Needleworks for the stitch guide. It's a beauty.

Lunchtime was the first min-lull. I took advantage to begin looking for canvases which appealed to me. My first stop: Tapestry Fair from Phoenix, AZ. With permission, I took a few photos. You know me: Cats, Cute, Halloween... in that order! Look what I found:

The Manuel Salas canvases were enticing to see up close and in person. It will be fun to watch Jane/Chilly Hollow stitch her canvas with the purple background.

Next stop was Little Shoppe Canvas Company. I am such a fan of their 3D work, their book: Stitch Landscapes and their App of the same title. My attention was drawn to their new Halloween Witch Hats. So cute. There are 12 new designs. Which ones do I want? I want them all.

Across the aisle from them was DJ Designs from San Francisco, CA. The Dog and Cat canvases were heart-warming to see.

A new crowd was gathering around the NeedleDeeva booth, so I returned to write more orders. The time flew by. I know I am going to sleep good tonight.

TNNA / Phoenix 2012 - day one

Hi Everybody... Robin here... in Phoenix.

Thursday morning I boarded the big Delta plane for Phoenix. It was the smoothest flight ever... like riding on a marshmallow. It was fun looking through the window: as we passed over New Mexico, from the air, it looked like a foreign world. Absolutely breathtaking.

My stitching project on the plane is my personal copy of the 3D Cake from Associated Talents which I taught for DMC showcasing the DMC Memory Thread. I loved working this little canvas so much, I am stitching it again for me. Size 14 mesh canvas from Associated Talents... DMC threads... what's not to love?

The 3D Cake Embellishment class was very well received. On Friday afternoon, Shop Owners from all over the country attended the class. DMC brought stunning finished pieces with Memory Thread for the students to see. They were given time to work with the Memory Thread. I shared many of my helpful hints with them, too. I believe everyone was more confident about how easy it is to use, as well as how effective the results are. It was a successful class and I was honored to be considered for the opportunity to teach for DMC. Blog readers note: I will conclude the Memory Thread lessons when I get back home to Memphis.

Immediately after the class, I packed up my models and headed to Sample It. There, I dropped off the Lotus Squared piece to Zecca. It was her first time to see it finished. The black lacquered box was stunning. The threads, beads and ribbons jumped under the lights. Zecca was thrilled. It will be on display in the Zecca booth during market. I would encourage all shop owners to stop by and see it in person... Lotus Squared by Zecca (ZE 134) ... stitch guide by Robin King.

My other model on display was the HUGS pillow. The finishing was from Elizabeth Turner Collection, and, as usual, they did an awesome job. HUGS was on display during Galleria at the Alice Peterson Company area. Such a thrill to see it finished and to show it off to the Shop Owners. HUGS will be on display in the Alice Peterson Company booth this weekend during Market. Shop Owners should stop by to see it in person and order it for their customers. Team Deeva was busy during Sample It. The Gooey Valentine's Day Hearts were a hit. I am so proud of their success.

My next project (among many!) is called Sunflower & Berries from NeedleDeeva. It is canvas number ND 309 and I have admired it for the longest time. I love Sunflowers. I have grown them before. Strawberries are so healthy, too. We eat them daily for a dose of Vitamin C. This canvas really speaks to me and NeedleDeeva designs are a dream to stitch. My stitch guide will come with the canvas. Sweet.

I will be teaching Sunflower & Berries in April 2012 at two wonderful needlepoint shops: Nashville Needleworks (Nashville, TN) and In Stitches (Atlanta, GA). Give them a call to join the fun.

Threads, Ribbons, Beads, Sequins, and DMC Memory Thread

I have pulled some threads. Notice the ribbons? Oh, yes... there will be ribbonwork as well as 3D Stumpwork applied. And, Beads... did I mention Beads? There will be Beads and Sequins, too. It will be so much fun. I have been studying many techniques and am anxious to apply them to this sweet canvas.

A Flower Magnet for a Flower Canvas? Of course.

One last fun thing to say: notice my Flower Magnet? How can you not notice it? It is the "Mother" of all Bling in the Magnet World. It measures 2 inches across. The center and all of the petals are ready to hold your needles, laying tool and more.

Nice accessories: magnets, snap tray and Eiffel Tower scissors

I found these magnets at Stitchers Inc. They were the biggest magnet bling I had ever seen. Truly, could be jewelry. Loved their size and shapes. You can see her current selection; there are more coming at the end of the month. Jan said there will be a cat magnet, too. Count me in. Can't wait. Give Jan a call if you'd like any of these magnets.

Lotus Squared by Zecca (ZE 134)

I'm in "countdown mode" getting ready to attend the Phoenix/TNNA Winter Market next week. Looking forward to seeing the new designs and friends, too.

Back in October 2011, I gave a preview of the Lotus Squared by Zecca. Last evening was time for the finishing of this piece. I am pleased with the outcome and would like to share my journey with you.

I decided to have this piece finished into an HP Black Lacquer Box. The workmanship is beautiful. It comes in a nice drawstring bag. The 8x8 box was perfect for the 6x6 canvas; the black showcased the elegance of the Lotus Squared.

Both Canvas and Lid are 6x6 and yet...

Once I was finished stitching, I laid the box lid over the canvas to check the initial fit. Notice the white canvas showing? I saw it too, and knew I had to deal with it. Here is what I did.

Following the photos, you can see I embraced the saying: Measure twice, cut once. In fact, I did that and more. I measured... measured again... wrote down notes... thought about it... stepped away... came back to it... measured again... until I was sure I was on the right track.

I did the Basketweave Stitch in the Stitching Margin. I used 8 strands of Splendor S1014 which covered my white canvas perfectly. Remember, I chose the design on 13 mesh.

Then, I got the big scissors out and began cutting on the Cutting Line. Steady. Deliberate. Holding my breath the entire time. I filmed part of this sequence for you to see. Confidence? Sure... while the camera was rolling. LOL.

With the canvas cut, I placed it onto the Black Box Lid insert and saw things were going to fit just fine.

Inserting the canvas into the Box Lid was easy. Just lay it into the lid and place the Black Lid insert over your canvas. Simple. Done. No gluing or taping needed. The size of the Black Lid insert does all the work.

I am so pleased with the outcome. Love the Zecca design. Love the HP Black Lacquer box. I am pretty proud of my stitching design, too. The River Silks Ribbon was a dream to use. Loved the Gloriana Silk Threads. The DMC Memory Thread was perfect for the Lotus details. Rainbow Gallery's Neon Rays, Flair, and Splendor gave the right touch. Kreinik was my go-to choice for the Stems. Skip Tent was the best background... and the Mill Hill Beads! really set off the piece. I discovered some stitching techniques and have shared them in the Stitch Guide.

My Stitch Guide comes with the Lotus Squared canvas (ZE 134) and will be available from Zecca at "Sample It" as well as during the Phoenix show. Just ask your LNS to visit the Zecca booth. You have your choice of this design in either 18 mesh or 13 mesh. I chose the 13 mesh and loved working it.

Christmas needlepoint ornaments

I took down the Christmas tree this evening. What? I know... the time got away from me.

This did give me an opportunity to photograph my Christmas needlepoint ornaments for you to see. I made them several years ago. They are still precious to me as they were when I first stitched them.

This year's tree had a refreshing color scheme: Gump's sale lime green tree, vintage pink glass ornaments and my needlepoint ornaments. Too cute. It measures 36" tall. Just the right size.

The 8 vintage pink glass ornaments have flocked white snow caps with hangers attached. The box says The Christmas Gallery, Copyright 1967 by Krain & Canton, Inc. Made in USA. (The box is pre-barcode... sweet!) We found them at the thrift store several years ago; so glad to give them a new home.

Most of my needlepoint ornaments have a common theme: snowmen.

There is a bird ornament...

and a cat ornament, too.

Someday, I would like to build from Vicky De Angelis' inspiration of having a cat-themed tree. I already have some cat canvases. Here are four just ready to go onto stretcher bars.

Plus, I have a Kitty Cat tree skirt, too. Really, it is an apron but I like to use it as a tree skirt.

Sounds like the purr-fect project for 2012. Think I will check out my stash for threads.

3D Cake with DMC Embellishment - part one

Happy New Year. I am just amazed how quickly the time has passed. Ready for this New Year? Let's start off with my latest project.

Embellishments with DMC Memory Thread

I had been asked to teach at TNNA in Phoenix for the DMC class: 3D Cake Embellishment with DMC Memory Thread. What an honor. I received the canvas (CD 1200) and DMC threads in the mail. What a cute canvas from Associated Talents; part of a scene from their Store Front Bakery canvas (FL712). This canvas design measures 4" W x 6.5" H and is on 14 mesh. Sweet!

The canvas had already been stitched for the photo posted on the TNNA website, but I wanted to give my own spin to the design.

When I first saw this cake, I also saw a different background for it... I was seeing a "wall" and "floor", too. I studied all of my books and visioned the sweetest "wall paper" design adapted from Julia Snyder's Darn Filling book. Her stitch is called Confetti Ribbons and is a darning pattern. My stitch is done as a satin stitch and I have called it Mirrored Confetti Ribbons. I like how the curls in the Wallpaper echo the curves on the Cake Stand. Thanks, Julia, for the awesome inspiration.

In my mind, I liked the idea, but I needed to test it out on the computer... just to make sure. Here is a screen shot of the Mirrored Confetti Ribbons. I was liking the look.

Then, I pondered the "floor" design. I was all over the place on that idea. At first, I tried to give it "real" perspective: larger floor pattern in the front and smaller in the back. Good in theory, but not the right idea for this deadline-ladened gal. As the clock was ticking, I shifted my focus and began stitching the Cake Tiers.

After I stitched the Middle Cake Tier, my Eureka moment for the Floor occurred. I had seen a stitch in Ruth Schmuff's Stitches CD Volume 1 which echoed the new Middle Cake Tier design. Her stitch is called Diagonal Stitch with Mosaic. I modified her stitch and now call it Diagonal Stitch with Herringbone Strap. Thanks, Ruth for your wonderful CDs/Books collections of stitches.

Again, I needed to test it out in the computer... just to make sure. Here is a screen shot of the Wallpaper and Floor. Love it. I even added the Wall Baseboard for separation. I was good to go... except... what threads to use?

In my thread kit from DMC, the Perle size 5 was awesome for the Cake. However, in order for the Cake to be the "star of the show"... the Wallpaper and Floor needed to lay back... to really be in the background.

DMC Perle size 8 800 and DMC Floss 800 were the perfect duo for my Wallpaper and Floor. I used the DMC Perle size 8 for the Wallpaper. Easy to use; no laying tool needed. I used 2 strands DMC Floss for the Diagonal Stitch component of the Floor. (Yes, use your laying tool when stitching the Floss.) I used the DMC Perle 8 for the Herringbone Strap component of the Floor. LOVE IT.

Next time I will show the Cake Embellishment ideas. I had so much fun. DMC Memory Thread is my new best friend. If your LNS is attending the TNNA Phoenix Market, ask them to take my class: Friday, 2PM-4PM, FT210. They will learn lots of DMC Memory Thread techniques to share with their customers.

I have another HUGS update to share. This canvas has been a fun exercise in color opportunities. It can be tailored to your specific color likes or needs.

Stephanie in Texas made a wonderful suggestion in a recent comment section:

"I am thinking that this would be a great canvas to stitch for a child going away to college. A little reminder on the bed or chair that Momma and Daddy send hugs. You could do school colors or dorm design colors, etc. Any way you look at it, it looks great."

As you might remember, I selected the Gloriana Silk Thread (Laura's Garden #084) for my color way. From there, I wanted an accent color for the Border and behind the H.

In the computer, I played around with color options. Here is the same canvas with different color accents: first purple, then coral. It's easy to pull colors from the overdyed thread.

Each color way sets the mood.

A few Overdyed thread options:
DMC, Gloriana and ThreadworX.

See how it might look with different color ways? All you will need is an overdyed color, a neutral color, an accent color, black color, beads, Kreinik size 8 braid, and Neon Rays. Imagine the possibilities. The HUGS canvas will come with my stitch guide... 11 pages.

The HUGS canvas is finished and is now in the wonderful hands of Elizabeth Turner Collection for their finishing magic. The pillow will be delivered to me in Phoenix at the beginning of the Market. It will be on display at the Alice Peterson Company booth.

Sometimes a little Basketweave is just what a needlepoint piece needs. A place to rest your eyes, if you will. It's the cornerstone of our stitching repertoire, and yet, we might overlook using it because we are in love with all those other decorative stitches.

In the 1970's, I learned how to do the Basketweave stitch from reading a charted diagram. (True confessions: I began as a self-taught stitcher.) I understood it had a diagonal pathway. Only recently did I realize there was more to that stitch... much more to learn... to do it correctly.

Last year I was photographing Vicky De Angelis' stitched models for NeedleDeeva. Getting close to her work through the camera and computer, I noticed her beautiful Basketweave stitches.

Then, I looked at my stitching. At the time, I was stitching The Devil (ND 0467-B) from the Creepy Characters. Quite a different look for the same stitch. I was keeping the diagonal pathway; what else could I do to improve my technique?

Walk Up the Steps

I had remembered the saying, "Walk up the Steps... Slide down the Poles." In my early stitching days, I heard it, and yet, couldn't/wouldn't process it. I never took time to study the canvas threads: the warp and the weft threads. There was a wonderful charted diagram in The NeedleWorks March 2011 e-newsletter which gave me my "ah-ha" moment. The horizontal steps and the vertical poles were pointed out to me; cue the celestial choir.

At the same time, I remembered Amy Bunger taught a 2-hour class about Basketweave at TNNA. Imagine that... 2 hours on the Basketweave stitch. Currently, I am editing the Tony Minieri DVDs, Back to Basics • Level One, and again, the Basketweave stitch was discussed in depth.

So now, I understand the Basketweave stitch. Here are some points to share with you:

Pay attention to the canvas threads: walk up the Steps and slide down the Poles. It really does matter.
When beginning a new thread, pay attention to your last stitch and begin the next stitch in the correct sequence. If your begin at the other end, you will get a "striped" look.
When ending the thread, do not run it back into the worked area. You will get a "hole" in the stitching. Instead, pull your thread forward so the new thread will have coverage on the backside.
To end the thread, run it either horizontal or vertical along a few stitches; never diagonally.

HUGS from Robin - part four

Hi Everybody... Robin here.

My original color scheme for the HUGS canvas was cream, tone-on-tone, with Kreinik 102 for a metallic accent. It looked pretty while I was auditioning stitches... elegant and safe... all at the same time. Then I started to think about you... the stitcher... the customer... the student and not just... me. What if one didn't like a tone-on-tone idea? Could one see beyond the cream for wonderful color opportunitites? Would the cream tone-on-tone get this canvas design overlooked?

So I decided to bring in some other color options for the HUGS canvas.

When I think of wonderful colors, I think of hand-dyed and over-dyed threads. Gloriana, ThreadworX, DMC, Sampler Threads, Weeks Dye Works, and Caron Collection are just some to spark your interest. I studied all of the colors and began to pull those which spoke to me. Again, the beauty of this canvas is that you can pull colors which speak to you! Here are some examples from the Gloriana Threads website. Anne Frazier makes the prettiest color-ways. Check them out at your next opportunity.

Then, I picked a solid color. I did keep the cream going by selecting Splendor S802. Remember, I was still smitten with the Dream pillow's pink & white diamonds. I didn't want to exactly copy it, but I sure was inspired by it.

Oh, one note from some previous comments: the schematic diagrams were done in green because I needed a color for "illustration" purposes; when I was doing the charting, I was still in a cream, tone-on-tone mode... which would be hard to read on the computer. But, if green makes you happy... then go for it.

My hand-dyed thread choice was Laura's Garden (#084) from Gloriana Threads. The flowing colors are so beautiful. They made me happy. I also saw some other solid color opportunities to introduce, if needed.

Let's continue with my HUGS progress. I have a lot to share with you.

When last we spoke, I mentioned I had a design concept in my head and was going to try it out on the computer. Actually, my mind was spinning with the blank canvas possibilities. I needed to see them and confirm them before I could stitched them. I studied my books from Amy Bunger, Brenda Hart, Suzanne Howren & Beth Robertson, SuZy Murphy, Ruth Schmuff, and Julia Snyder, and finally decided to go with inspiration from my Jean Taggart books.

I never met Jean Taggart but hold her in highest regards from stories told to me by Amy Bunger and Tony Minieri. I have two of her books, Laid Fillings for evenweave fabrics and Darning Patterns for evenweave fabrics, and refer to them often. Since my original intention for this HUGS canvas was to showcase a Laid Filling pattern, going with Jean Taggart just made sense.

First, I came up with the border. It's a Hearts border; after all, we are talking about hugs! I was wanting something which "showed the love." It looks like a brocade ribbon, don't you think? I feel it will have many uses beyond this HUGS canvas.

Then I needed to deal with the center area. I was still smitten with the diamond pattern on the Dream Pillow; I wanted a diamond pattern, too. I wanted a Laid Filling "diamond" pattern... also known as a Diagonal Trellis filling pattern.

I counted the number of threads between the border to find the center point. Then, I laid out a grid in the computer. I was seeing so many possibilities for this canvas. Should I work the entire center area in the Laid Filling or should I break it up by adding alternating solid color diamonds? Again, it was easy to figure it out in the computer. I am going to give different scenarios in my stitch guide.

I'll share more with you the next time. Which colors to use? Which threads to use? Again... the possibilities are endless.

I had first seen the Gayla Elliott sayings during TNNA. Her Dream canvas and model were on display in the Alice Peterson Company booth. It was lovely because of the diamond design and the pink & white colors. I was smitten.

The HUGS ideas began swirling in my mind. I wanted to design my own diamond pattern; one which would lend itself to the white unpainted canvas. I also wanted to work in a Laid Foundation pattern. I thought both would play nice with the Square H design. I wanted a Border, too. Yes, Santa... I wanted it all.

I sketched some ideas on graph paper and then worked the rest of the details in the computer.

Needlepoint Bermuda Bags

It's Monday. Hope everyone had a nice weekend. This morning, I just finished posting some new canvases to Amy's website: Bermuda Bag covers from What's the Point? Designs.

I was searching the needlepoint Bermuda Bag topic and (of course!) the first Google search I ran across was our dear friend, Jane/Chilly Hollow. She has already discussed that topic in April 2011.

The Bermuda Bag was popular in the 1970's. (I still have my navy Bermuda Bag.) Glad to see the classics come back in style; entering our needlepoint world, too.

So, today, I will further add to the Bermuda Bag topic by sharing some of the photos I took at the TNNA/Columbus June 2011.

We were in the What's the Point? Designs booth; Jill, from Amy's, was with me. She became quite animated over what she was seeing on their wall: Bermuda Bag canvases! They had a finished model, too. Generously, they allowed me to photograph their bag. (Note: thanks to Jill for being the Hand Model, too.)

In June 2011 they had 3 designs: Tulip Bermuda Bag Cover (219A), Stripe Bermuda Bag Cover (219C), and Confetti Bermuda Bag Cover (219D). Each are on 14 mesh.

Here's a closer look. They stitched one canvas for the front side and had fabric attached to the other side. So clever.

The canvas is attached with buttons. Notice how the arch of the buttons placement on the canvas mimics the arch on the Bermuda Bag form.

Being the thoughtful blogger that I am, I called What's the Point? to see if they had any more designs since the June 2011 Market. Yes, they did have new designs. I spoke with Lynn (a very nice lady!) and through the wonders of technology, Lynn sent the following photos. (These designs are so new... they aren't on their website, yet. Lucky you.)

The Needle Bug wrap up

Hi Everybody... Robin here... back home in Memphis.

I had the best time teaching the Columbus Heart (#150G from NeedleDeeva) at
The Needle Bug. It was a nice class size, the women were eager to learn, and their hospitality exceeded my expectations. I showed them some interesting techniques which will be handy for future canvases, too.

Here are some photos from Leigh Miller, the owner of The Needle Bug.

After teaching on Saturday, on the way home, Leigh decided to stop and let me feed the deer which live next to her. (We had some apple slices left over from lunch.) Leigh was out of the car first; I was still fumbling with my seatbelt. I heard a "yelp" and I thought, "Oh, so that's how you call the deer."

I came around to the driver's side of the car and Leigh was holding her hand. In her most delicate Southern drawl she said, "Looks like we will be going to the Emergency Room after you feed the deer." I looked at her hand which was gushing blood. She had slammed her finger in the car door!

Ouch! Yikes!!! We found some paper napkins and applied pressure while I fed the deer. (Note: she really did want me to feed the deer!)

Back home and after Leigh's finger was cleaned up, she decided to not go to the Emergency Room. We all watched the Auburn vs. University of Mississippi football game. Love the SEC spirit. The next day I flew home to Memphis. Her finger was still hurting so Leigh did get her finger checked out. The email was waiting for me: Broken!!!!

What an unfortunate ending to a wonderful time. But wait!!! There's more. The flight from Montgomery to Atlanta had engine trouble; luckily, it was discovered while still on the tarmac. (The left engine wasn't working!) We went back to the gate, got off the plane, and stood in line to book another flight to Atlanta.

Delta Airlines had a wonderful Plan B: they hired a convoy of shuttle vans (7) to drive us to Atlanta. According to Google Maps, Montgomery to Atlanta is 151 miles; 2 hours 26 minutes. We made it in great time. Delta upgraded my ticket to First Class (sweet!), and the flight home was smooth and fast. Seems like you do get there quicker when you fly First Class.

What a wonderful time teaching in Montgomery! Adventure. Drama. Sports. New Friends. Great Food. Great Drinks. Speaking of which... look at the awesome gift I received from Leigh and her family. What can I say? I think they get me. Love the Mason jar lid, too. You never know when you might need a To-Go cup. LOL.

Happy Halloween!

I stitched this Halloween Sampler from EyeCandy Needleart. Beads, Burmilana and Kreinik were all it took. So cute. Ada is an awesome designer.

I made this Halloween Stained Glass picture frame. It would be perfect for a photo of one's grandkids dressed up for Halloween, don't you think? It has a glass beveled stand and a 4" square bevel for the photo. One of these days I will have an Etsy.com listing for my Stained Glass work.

Now... let's talk about the Nutcrackers and Smokers! (Yes, I've got it bad.) Christian Ulbricht is my preferred Nutcracker designer, but I do have some from other designers, too.

Mini-Stockings are not just for Christmas! Melissa Shirley Designs made them for Halloween, too.

These Mini-Stockings are from the Tricky Treater series (MSD 613 A-H)) by Melissa Shirley. There are a total of 8 in the series. I stitched these five:

Like I mentioned before, these might not be listed on Melissa's current website but she says she can paint any design from the catalogs.

I stitched these during Amy's canvas enhancement classes on Thursdays. They were finished by M's Canvashouse in Lexington, KY. They all have the same Black/White Glow in the Dark Kreinik trim. Each stocking has a different color moire fabric backing. They all have an opening at the top like a real stocking. I put them on the Black Feather Wreath to showcase the collection.

Notice the Black Cat Face... to the left of the wreath? I saw an episode on Martha Stewart where they were making treat bags out of paper mache. Their technique was my inspiration to make this Black Cat Face. Sweet!

The Needle Bug - day two

Hi Everybody... Robin here... in Montgomery, AL.

Today was the first day to teach at The Needle Bug. The tables were set with canvas, threads, and accessories. Both breakfast and lunch were served. It was Southern Comfort at its best.

Meri M. brought in her recently finished stocking for her son's dog, Traveler. Soon Meri's son and wife will be new parents. Meri stitched a stocking for Traveler before all eyes were focused on the new baby. Lucky Traveler. Leigh designed this canvas for Meri. If you need a stocking for your pup/grand pup... give Leigh at The Needle Bug a call. Love the Dog Bone darning stitch and the Dog Name Tag. Yes, Traveler is a lucky dog!

After class we watched the World Series/ Game 7. I am sorry for those who didn't enjoy the outcome. Next year, right? We went out to dinner, Young Barn Pub and Oyster Bar. Very nice and attentive waitress.

Tonight's cocktail was the Blue Moon beer. Love the Orange garnish. Now, that's how to get your Vitamin C!

Dinner was Alligator Sausage with Shrimp and Grits... and a dinner salad on the side. Nice. I thought I was visiting Charleston. Good Eats.

Tonight's dinner was at Roux restaurant. It was a happening place to be.

Halloween Festival 2011 continues. Here we go!

Here is my Halloween Cat Pull Toy from Melissa Shirley Designs (MSD 700). I first saw this canvas at M's Canvashouse when I was visiting my family. I knew I had to have it! Then, I came home and worked on it during Amy's canvas enhancement classes on Thursdays. I had it finished at Marlene's/San Francisco. Love the fringe.

I wrote its stitch guide and many people have enjoyed stitching it. Congratulations to Betsy Swartwood who received Best of Show at the Kentucky State Fair for her Halloween Cat Pull Toy. Here is what Betsy said about her experience:

"I just wanted to share with you the ribbons this piece received at the 2011 KY State Fair. Thanks so much for a wonderful stitch guide! My only change was substituting the gold bead on the handle! Needless to say, I was thrilled. Again, thanks so much." -- Betsy Swartwood

I have also written the Halloween Crow Pull Toy (MSD 700-B) stitch guide. I haven't stitch it myself, but did use many of the same stitching techniques from the Halloween Cat Pull Toy.

Both canvases were on 13 mesh, available from Melissa Shirley Designs. LOVE her designs. Oh, look... you could do the same pumpkin treatment like I did for the Tall Sickly Green 3-D Wacky Halloween House.

Halloween Decorations from Robin - part 5

Let's continue with my Halloween Showcase. Yes, I know... Day 5, but I really ♥ Halloween.

Here is my Tall Sickly Green 3-D Wacky Halloween House. It is from Melissa Shirley Designs (MSD 576-B). I stitched it during Amy's canvas enhancement classes on Thursday nights. Once it was finished, I gave Amy the class notes from which she assembled her Home Study project.

I had fun stitching this house and learned many techniques including Raised Stem stitch for the Pumpkins (you can see the technique in DVD #8, Spiders and More!)

I also became comfortable with the "barely there" coverage for both the house walls and the roof shingles. Notice the overdyed threads did all of the work!

Halloween Treat Bags. I love the idea of taking a canvas and having it made into a 3-D piece; lined and weighted. Ready to join your other Halloween decorations. Love the tassels, too! Each of these Treat Bags were finished by M's Canvashouse in Lexington, KY.

My first Halloween Treat Bag was made from this Shelly Tribbey canvas.

Then, I made this Wizard of OZ treat bag for both my Halloween collection and my Wizard of OZ collection. (Yes, we will save that topic for another day!)

My third Halloween Treat Bag was a gift from my sister, Midge. She stitched this Renaissance Designs canvas and gave it to me for a Christmas present. It had been on display at M's Canvashouse. I admired it every time I visited their shop... never knowing it would be mine. I love the beaded-on-wire Spider Legs.

The theme of Halloween decorations continues: Needlepoint Ornaments from my past.

My needlepoint stitching was whipped into a frenzy when my youngest sister, Midge, worked at M's Canvashouse in Lexington, KY. She told me about the wonderful painted canvas designs and that I would really enjoy this kind of needlework. How right she was!

Who knew needlepoint would be a perfect way to further enhance my Halloween decorations and passion for the season?

I began stitching Halloween Ornaments. A few of my favorite designers were (and still are!) Shelly Tribbey, Kathy Schenkel, Renaissance Designs, A Collection of Designs, Jody Designs, etc... All of these ornaments were finished by M's Canvashouse in Lexington, KY.

Look at the stands I found to hang individual ornaments. The wooden blocks from Kathy Schenkel are so colorful, don't you think?

Ornament Holders are just the right thing to showcase your stitching. Keep your eyes open for your next showpiece holder. I've had the best luck finding them at fancy florist/gift shops.

Here's another Halloween piece which I stitched during Amy's Thursday night canvas enhancement classes. It is from Shelly Tribbey; finishing by M's Canvashouse in Lexington, KY. Love the tassels!

Our black cat, Rayo, was the inspiration for choosing the canvas. He's a spirited cat but has mellowed over the years. Rayo is now our eldest cat... 9 years old.

Rayo was also my inspiration for making this Bobble Head Halloween Cat. I saw this idea on HGTV and made it soon after that. It really works, too.

Halloween Decorations from Robin - part 1

It's the countdown to Halloween. Time to step into the Wayback Machine and show some of the pieces I have stitched. Here we go...

One of my favorites is this 5x5 cube from Melissa Shirley Designs. I loved the designs but couldn't decide which one to stitch. So, I stitched 4 of them. Then, I had them made into a cube. The finishing was done by M's Canvashouse in Lexington, KY. Black Artic Rays from Rainbow Gallery was added along the edges. There is black moire fabric for the top and bottom. If this doesn't scream Halloween, I don't know what does!

Melissa said they don't keep older designs in stock but WILL paint anything in their catalog. These canvases are from the 484 series.

Hat 484-D

These were stitched during Amy's Thursday night canvas enhancement classes, again... back in the day. But, this idea isn't just for Halloween. Any four/same size canvases can be stitched and assembled into a cube. I've got my notes and can whip up a stitch guide for these, too.

Alabama... here I come.

At the end of this month, I will be teaching at The Needle Bug. How exciting it that!

I met Leigh at the Columbus / TNNA market this past June. She had heard about me; I had heard about her. When we met, it was like old home week. We were in the NeedleDeeva booth, admiring the Creepy Characters. Leigh said she wanted me to come teach at her shop in October. I showed her the finished Columbus Heart (ND 150G; named because it debuted at the Columbus market) and she loved it.

It is a good teaching piece. Crescent Roses. Ribbon Mums. Beading. Getting comfortable about stitching over the painted canvas in order to layer the design. These techniques can build confidence and inspiration for other projects, too.

I will be there for 2 days, October 28 and 29, 2011. If you are in the area, or want to take the class long-distance, give Leigh a call. The Needle Bug has true southern charm.

Look how you can finish this canvas. Michele Herron from the Bristly Thistle was in my TNNA class, and her piece was finished with "Welcome" added at the bottom. I LOVE this idea. Thanks for sharing, Michele.

I'll be blogging more about my trip to The Needle Bug once I get there. I am so excited for this opportunity to travel, meet other stitchers, share information, and shop!

Skip Tent stitch is an Awesome stitch!

Have I told you I LOVE the Skip Tent stitch? This isn't True Confessions; I'm just talking about an honest admiration for a needlepoint stitch.Perhaps you know it as the Basketweave Twill? Regardless of its name or your locale, it is a wonderful stitch when the moment is right.

Skip Tent stitch was taught to me by Amy Bunger; one of her "go to" stitches. If it's good enough for Amy...

First, let's begin with the pathways:

Work it like the Basketweave; in a diagonal pathway, skipping over one canvas intersection when beginning the next row.

Look at this photo. I am stitching the Skip Tent stitch going on the downward/diagonal descent. I am going to have to jump over this "obstacle" and try to figure out where is my next stitch. Gulp!

Fear not. In the beginning, a choice was given: would I be stitching on the Horizontal threads or the Vertical threads? For this canvas, I chose the Horizontal threads. And, with that knowledge, I knew my stitches would ONLY be on the Horizontal threads. (Pssst.... you could choose the Vertical threads. It would have been OK. You would just always stitch on the Vertical threads. Easy breezy!)

I am stitching the Lotus Squared by Zecca (ZE 134) and writing the stitch guide. I saw it on display in her booth at the Baltimore market. Last year I stitched Early Bird (ZE 107) and was looking for another opportunity to work with Zecca. Lotus Squared comes in both 13 mesh and 18 mesh; both are 6" x 6". I love the colors of this painted canvas. Zecca has an eye for botanical/nature designs, don't you think.

The Beads, Kreinik, Ribbons and the DMC Memory Thread give just the right touch of texture. I loved stitching this piece on 13 mesh. I believe you will, too.

Decorating Ideas for Halloween

As Halloween time approaches, the stores are now filled with wonderful trinkets and decorations to augment and display our needlepoint.

Consider the Halloween trees. Great for hanging all of your wonderful ornaments. Check with your Florist Shops (those who decorate all-out for the seasons) as well as online (Palma alerted me to this one from Pier 1 Imports) and your local craft stores, discount and Hallmark stores. I now have 7 Halloween Trees and am always looking for more.

I made my first Halloween Tree. Took a great-looking branch when doing tree trimming, and put it into a Halloween painted bucket which had been filled with sand and gravel. My ornaments looked right at home.

The Feather wreaths are available, too. I googled black feather wreath and came up with many options from Party City, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Target, Etsy.com, etc. Here's 2 photos of the Creepy Characters on my black feather wreath.

Speaking of Feather Wreaths, be sure to read Michele's blog, Needlepoint Tips and Techniques. She weighed the options of DIY versus Purchase Ready Made for her new Feather Wreath. Smart lady.

Need special trinkets? Look at your local craft store or scrapbooking store. Here is what I found at a recent trip to Michael's. Yes, now is the time to add to your stash. Don't forget the Fabric shops. The Halloween Fabrics are great for table skirts or mantle scarves.

I am honing my enabling skills... learned from the best... Jane/Chilly Hollow. Go see what you can find. 'Tis the howling season. (Thanks, Michele for the great word!) And, if you come across something fabulous, be sure to let me know.

The Pumpkin and The Jacquard

Hi Everybody... Robin here.

Today we are going to do a Show & Tell about the Jacquard Stitch. One of my favorites. So much so, I used it on The Pumpkin. His face was prime real estate, and I wanted visual impact... drama, if you will.

Originally, I was considering the Irregular Jacquard Stitch. Nothing screams Halloween like the Irregular Jacquard Stitch. Irregular meaning the stair steps are skinny, fat, long and short... all at the same time. (Pssst... Irregular is code talk for Random.) You can see it on the outfit for the Witch. She is my perennial stitching partner.

However, since I wanted the WOW factor, I decided to go with the "regular" Jacquard Stitch. First thing I did was plan my pathways on the computer. Seeing it in front of me started to make sense. Sure do love Photoshop!

Then I stitched the Tent Stitches with the ThreadworX overdyed Kreinik. Good stuff.

Then I filled in the Diagonal Satin Stitches. Kind of gave him an intense, vibrating look. Just the right amount of drama from the first Creepy Character from NeedleDeeva.

The Harvest Fairy & the Autumnal Equinox

Hi Everybody... Robin here.

Happy September Equinox. For those of us living in the northern hemisphere, today is the Autumnal/Fall Equinox. Conversely, any blog readers in the southern hemisphere are enjoying their Vernal/Spring Equinox.

I found a nice website explaining the September Equinox. Their photo shows the Sun perpendicular to the Earth's north/south axis during this time of the year. Very interesting.

The Harvest Fairy (MSD DM-09) wanted be present for everyone's first day of Fall. I think this piece is a nice introduction to my favorite time of the year. The gripping temperatures are easing up. The leaves are starting to change colors. The wind is nice and breezy. There is a new bounce in my step. Sweet.

To refresh your memory, this is a Debbie Mumm® canvas from Melissa Shirley Designs. My stitch guide is available with detailed composite stitches and photographs. I used beads, ribbons, DMC Memory Thread, as well as wonderful threads from Gloriana, NPI, ThreadworX, and Rainbow Gallery.

The Pumpkin and the IDenti-Pen

The Pumpkin (ND 0467-A) has been sent out and I am going to share some behind the scene photos I took while I stitched him.

When working on the background, I noticed the Orange Dots were not placed exactly where I needed for the stitch I chose. Fear Not! I got out my trusty IDenti-Pen and marked out the Orange Dots in question.

Here are some before and after photos.

You can get the Sakura IDenti-Pen from your Local Needlepoint Shop. I used the one which had the Dual Points (Fine and Extra Fine)... just perfect for your every needs. The IDenti-Pen is both a Permanent Marker and Waterproof. This is very important for your needlepoint. (Be careful with other markers: not all Permanent Pens are also Waterproof.)

Hooty Owl in Needlepoint Now magazine

Subscribers to Needlepoint Now magazine should be getting their copy September/October 2011 issue pretty soon. And, when you do... check out the back cover. It's Hooty Owl from the Creepy Characters series. Then, look on page 12. There is an article about NeedleDeeva and me, as well as the complete stitch guide for Hooty. 4 pages! How exciting.

Judee/NeedleDeeva initially designed Hooty Owl (ND 0467-i) for the magazine subscribers, and for all Owl lovers, too. I really enjoyed stitching him. Some of the interesting threads I used were Fuzzy Stuff and Petite Very Velvet for a fluffy-soft Owl look.

There are beading, ribbons and Slide Bullion techniques. Needlepoint Now will be posting their technique video of the Slide Bullion, but here's the diagram from my stitch guide. I used Kreinik braid and frayed the end in order to grab one of the threads. Then I took the remaining braid bundle and slid down the pole... creating the Slide Bullion for Hooty's Feet. This is a fun technique and I used it on other Creepy Characters, too. Have you used it yet? I would love to hear from you.

Contact your Local Needlepoint Shop to order Hooty Owl or any of the Creepy Characters. Each can be purchased individually or the complete series. HUGS from Robin

Hi Everybody... Robin here.

Well, I heard back from TNNA. They said, "Thanks, but No Thanks" for me teaching in Phoenix 2012. Perhaps, I should have submitted 2 or more canvas candidates for their choices. Anyway... currently, I have enough on my plate, and will try again for teaching in Columbus 2012.

I am still going to proceed with the intended class canvas. I had discussed it with a few Shop Owners while in Baltimore; they liked the concept as a class for their customers. One thing about teaching at TNNA, it does open doors for other teaching opportunities at shops across the country.

So... what am I stitching? It is a NEW canvas from artist, Gayla Elliott, and distributed by Alice Peterson Company. Gayla has a nice group of Sayings canvases. You can see them on her website: Gayla Elliott Designs.

I asked Gayla for a new saying; one which I would write the stitch guide. She agreed. My mind was spinning all over the place. What message did I want to send?

I began remembering all of the sayings my Dad said to me:

I never chew my onions twice.
I'd rather owe it to you than cheat you out of it.
You can lead a whore to Vassar but you can't make her think.

My Dad was a clever man. Witty and funny. Each of those sayings molded me into who I am today; however, they are might be too long for this needlepoint assignment.

So... what is my saying? HUGS. It is my Term of Endearment. I keep "Love" for Pat. I get confused about the XOXO or is it OXOX (?)... so I usually leave that one alone. But, HUGS... feels good and lets people know I am embracing them with all of my good energy and care.

I will keep you posted on my HUGS progress. I've been auditioning stitches and have settled on a concept for the stitch guide. There are lots of options when working with a blank/unpainted canvas... which is the beauty of this next project. It is an affordable canvas with an open color palette... just right for creative stitches, too. And, the message is straight from my heart.

Photo Session with Lana, Leo and the Creeps

Hi Everybody... Robin here.

Has everyone survived the hurricane? Irene was a doozy. Glad she's gone. So sorry for all of the damage and lost lives. I did enjoy spending my moments with Jim Cantore on the Weather Channel. He's dreamy. And, did you know he is Vicky De Angelis' cousin? How cool is that?

While I am waiting to hear if TNNA is going to select me for teaching at Phoenix 2012, I have been tending to other deadlines. I am designing an ad for NeedleDeeva/Creepy Characters for the November/December Needlepoint Now magazine.

I had two helpers during the photo shoot: Lana and Leo. This was their first "official" photo shoot.

Lana was very busy checking out all of the props.

Lana loved the Feather Wreath.

Leo chilled. He knows how to work the camera.

Initially I set up my tall Halloween Tree for the Creeps backdrop but changed my mind to a different tree. Yes... I have 4 trees (!) plus a black feather wreath so it was easy to change things out. In fact, I ended up using my Martha Stewart Halloween Tree. Looks good. You'll see the ad in the magazine. Later, I might be able to preview it here and on the Creepy Characters Facebook page, too.

Here's a picture of the tree with all of the Creeps. Many of you will be participating in the full series... others of you will select your Creeps to do. Either way, it's a fun time.

Jean Smith Designs and the Movies

My bags are unpacked and the laundry is done. Kittens have been hugged. I'm back home in Memphis.

Reflecting on my trip to Baltimore, I wanted to share a bit of Needlepoint News with you.

Jean Smith Designs attended the Fall Market Baltimore Show. I have had the chance to meet her at previous markets. She is a lovely lady. Very stylish and elegant. Jean had some fun news to share: her needlepoint canvases and stitched models will be used on the movie set of The Big Wedding. How cool is that! This bit of news was also printed on page 24 of the Needlework Retailer/Fall Market Preview issue (July/August 2011).

The Big Wedding has a tentative release date of October 2012. It is a Lionsgate Film with actors including Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, Robin Williams, Katherine Heigl, Amanda Seyfried, Topher Grace and Ben Barnes. Susan Sarandon's character is an avid needlepointer. This movie was written and directed by Justin Zackham (The Bucket List) and is being filmed in Connecticut.

Finally! Some needlepoint/product prominent placement! What took them so long?

Jean Smith is known for her large florals designs...

And her fruit designs...

She also has nice children designs...

Several years ago, Vicky R., from Memphis, attended my Saturday canvas enhancement classes and her project was one of the Jean Smith Designs rug, Friendly Beasts Rug. It measures 46" W x 34" H on 10 mesh. Affectionately, Vicky called it "The Big Guy"; now finished, it lives with her daughter and grandchildren. (Lucky grandchildren!)

Many needlepoint shops are now having "movie nights" where they invite their customers to sit/stitch and watch a movie. Seems like The Big Wedding will be a natural fit... oh, and then, have a Jean Smith Designs Trunk show, too. (OK... the seeds have been planted.)

Good bye Baltimore. Hello Memphis.

Hi Everybody... Robin here... with Baltimore memories.

Monday was a travel day. Leaving Baltimore. Heading to Memphis. Saying good bye to Team Deeva... until the next time. Wondering if my suitcase will be over the 50 LB limit.

I went to the airport several hours early. The delayed departure was also several hours. (Rainstorms really upset peoples travels!) My non-stop was OK. Just late. Luckily, I listed Pat's phone number with Delta and they informed him about my pending arrival.

I brought my perennial travel stitching piece. The one with the black cat sitting at the table, eyeing what's in the cup. This canvas wins the Travel Trophy award. It has been to Long Beach, Columbus, Long Beach, Columbus, and now... Baltimore.

Crab Tour 2011 is also over. But, the memories will continue for sure. Here's a special photo from Pat. What a funny guy! Thanks, Robin

P.S. Oh, and by the way... the suitcase weighed 49 LB. Sweet!

Teaching at Bedecked & Beadazzled

Hi Everybody.. Robin here... with more Baltimore memories.

On Sunday morning, time in the NeedleDeeva room went quickly. You could tell the Shop Owners had picked up the pace going from room to room. It was their last day of shopping. I gathered up all the Creeps and Halloween Tree to travel with me for my next destination. At 11:30AM my ride (Pat, a nice lady/employee from B&B) arrived to bring me to Bedecked & Beadazzled for my teaching gig: Skeleton (ND 0467-J) the 10th Creepy Character from NeedleDeeva.

What can be said about Bedecked & Beadazzled that hasn't already been said? All I could say was WOW to the bright LIME GREEN walls and Leopard spots carpeting in the class room. Her displays are fresh. Excellent lighting through out the shop. Her models are beautifully finished, each with that special "Ruth Schmuff" touch. I looked/shopped for fun things to bring home as mementos from this trip.

There was a nice assortment of sequins, brads and buttons from Doodlebug Design, Inc. I HAD to have them. Here's what I brought home. Don't know exactly when I will use them or on which design, but knowing they are in my stash gives me great pleasure.

I also picked up the Stitch Landscape book by Little Shoppe Canvas Company. This was my first time to really study it. Each page has 6 stitch diagrams. 75 pages, spiral binding. Numbered, too. You do the math... there's a lot of stitches in this little book. I have a feeling this book is going to be my next "new best friend" when I resume stitch guide writing.

Finally, look at the darling magnet I found. Actually, Vicky De Angelis found it first, and then, I had to have one, too. You can see wonderful photos of the Bedecked & Beadazzled store taken by Vicky De Angelis posted on her blog, Mostly Needlepoint.

Ruth took a lot of photos of me teaching. You can see them on her blog, It's Not Your Grandmother's Needlepoint. The class was full. I met new folks and met stitching buddies from Stitcherie and Facebook. The class was from 1PM-4PM and the time just flew by. Everyone got to see the entire group of Creepy Characters in person. I used the white eraser board for things needing further explanation. I signed the visiting Teachers Board. How exciting was that! Previous names included Tony Minieri, Brenda Hart, Meredith Willett, Julia Snyder... and now, me. (Somebody... pinch me, OK?)

After class, we went out to dinner at Razorback's Raw Bar & Grill. Ruth, Pat, Kathy Balthrop (Stitching Studio & Gift Boutique/Richmond, VA) and I had more of the local fare (everyone say it with me...): CRAB CAKES. I was in my happy place.

It seems the favorite 2 sides with Maryland Crab Cakes are French Fries and Cole Slaw. Nothing wrong with that! The servings were plentiful; I brought half of the meal home for Monday's lunch before heading back to Memphis.

I had a wonderful time in Baltimore. Next will be the plane ride home to Memphis, Pat, the Mews and the Kittens: Leo and Lana. I sure do miss all of them. Thanks, Robin

Baltimore Market: Saturday... part 2

Hi Everybody... Robin here... with Baltimore memories.

The time passed so quickly in Baltimore and my blogging eventually got out of sync for a real-time experience. But, play along with me... let's pretend it's still Saturday... OK?

Saturday was the first full day of the Cash & Carry Market. I stayed pretty close to the NeedleDeeva camp; writing up orders and handing out Fraidy Cat canvases. I did get to step out a bit and enjoyed visiting the Amanda Lawford/DC Designs room. It was good to see Amanda and her son, Derrick, again.

I picked up a few canvases for myself. They are small and sweet. Two are from the artist, Mariko King (no relation... drats!) and one is from Amanda Lawford, her very self. I will enjoy working on each of these.

I visited the Rainbow Gallery room. Sally (from Rainbow Gallery) was in my Fraidy Cat class. She showed the class the NEW Petite Silk Lamé Braid. It comes in all the same colors as the Silk Lamé Braid 13 and 18. When I stopped by the Rainbow Gallery room, Sally gave me these samples: Pink (SP26), Black (SP01), and Purple (SP22). I can't wait to use them. Thanks to Rainbow Gallery for their wonderful array of threads. I really appreciate their thread kit donations for the Fraidy Cat class, too.

I also visited with Anne from Gloriana Threads. She has samples of her newest Gloriana Silk Floss including: Jubie's Pink (#225), Jersey Shore (#224), Thistle Purple (#215), and Thistle Orange (#214). Anne was especially pleased with the new HOT PINK. Can you see it on either a Zecca canvas or an EyeCandy Needlearts canvas? I know I can.

Anne also gave me some of the new Florimell Silk Floss including: Jubie's Pink (#225), Holiday Green (#016), and Emerald Green (#226). It is a hand-dyed Soie d'Alger. Very nice. Thank you, Anne, for your wonderful threads and generosity with the Creepy Characters.

My last visit (geez... I sound like such a social butterfly!) was to Dream House Ventures. Linda had supplied the Soy Luster and the Baroque Silk for the Creepy Characters. I stopped by to say hello and thanks. I noticed the full display of Empress Elite Blend just inside the door. It is a wonderful blend of Ultra Fine Merino Wool, Cashmere, and Silk. (Can you say YUMMY?) Linda let me pick out a color to bring home with me. Decisions... decisions. I finally chose the Heliotrope (#8026) which was the same color as the Baroque Silk used in the Creeps.

The rest of the evening was spent with friends and more feasting. I'll spare the meal photos... this time, OK? Let's just say there was plenty! Teaching at Bedecked & Beadazzled on Sunday will be the next topic. Until then... thanks, Robin.

Baltimore Market: Saturday... part 1

Hi Everybody... Robin here... in Baltimore.

On Saturday the Market began. Yes, there were the Early Bird sales on Friday evening from Participating Designers, but the main hustle and bustle began on Saturday morning.

The Embassy Suites was an interesting location for this Cash & Carry Market. I liked the atrium feel of the place.

The Designers were mainly on floors 5, 6, and 7. Many banners were hung to announce their location.

Also, the windows were decorated with lights and signage.

Here's the little Halloween Tree with all of the Creeps. They got peoples' attention, for sure. The kittens, Leo & Lana, picked out the right tree.

Team Deeva wrote more orders for the Creeps. As a Cash & Carry Market, shop owners were able to come in and purchase canvases for their shop to begin stitching their own Creeps. It was fun to put names with faces of the shop owners. It was a good day. I'll be back soon with more about Saturday (part 2) as well as my teaching experience at Bedecked & Beadazzled. Teaching and Feasting in Baltimore

Hi Everybody... Robin here... in Baltimore.

On Friday afternoon I taught the Fraidy Cat class to the Shop Owners attending the Baltimore Fall Market. Yes, what you have read on other blogs is true: the arrival of the Fraidy Cat canvases were delayed one day beyond the teaching class. ( Déjà vu 2, anyone?) Luckily, this time we had advanced notice and were able to devise a Plan B. Practice canvases were provided to the students thanks to Ruth Schmuff/Bedecked & Beadazzled, and we stitched our way through the stitch guide. Judee/NeedleDeeva came to the class and gave each student a Hooty Owl canvas as a "we apologize" gesture. Fraidy Cat did arrive the next day and all is right with the world.

Friday evening was a lovely dinner spent with a great group of people including Leigh Designs, Be Stitched Needlepoint, Sharon G, Team Deeva, Missy G and beau, and Stitchers Inc. We went to Kali's Court; ranked high on the Missy G favorites list.

My quest for crab continued. But I also tried some other food as well. I ordered off the Appetizers Menu: Cheese Tray, a chilled Gazpacho soup with Lump Crab meat, and Sea Scallops with Crab Ravioli & Goat Cheese. HEAVEN.

Oh, I forgot to mention the cocktail of the evening: the French Martini. I'm gonna do some more research on that drink. Ooo la la... I really had the best time, and it's only Friday. More days to come. Thanks, Robin

Crab Tour 2011 continues. Let me tell you... Maryland people know how to do Crabs!

Friday morning I joined Missy G (from Baltimore), Sharon G (yes, the designer!... not related to Missy G), Vicky De Angelis (yes, the stitcher/Team Deeva compadre) for breakfast at Miss Shirley's Cafe. It was one of Missy's favorites restaurants. I was a Missy-lemming. I KNEW I didn't need to re-invent the wheel... just ask Missy what she has had in the past, and go with that!

First off was the Breakfast Cocktail... a Spirited Beverage, if you will. I had the Pink Lemonade with the Blues. I live in Memphis. I know the Blues. Let me tell you.. this was wonderful. Here's the direct description for those playing along at home:

Pink Lemonade with The Blues

Strawberry Lemonade & Stoli Blueberry Vodka

Garnished with Blueberries, Strawberry, Lemon & Rock Candy Swizzle Stick with a Sugar Rim

Missy ordered a plate of Fried Green Tomatoes for the table as well as Sweet Potato French Fries with Lemon Aioli for one dipping sauce and Mango Ketchup for the other dipping sauce. Heaven.

I could have stopped there... but I didn't. Next, we ordered our main dish.

(Wait for it... what do you think I ordered?) I ordered the Crab Cake & Green Fried Tomatoes Eggs Benedict. I'll break it down for you: Poached Eggs, Mini Jumbo Lump MD Crab Cakes on top of Fried Green Tomatoes, Corn & Tomato Relish with Asparagus & Old Bay Hollandaise Sauce. So plentiful. So wonderful. I ate what I could and brought the rest home for lunch.

It was a great way to start the day. Big thanks to Missy G. She is the ultimate Hostess, indeed. Next on the agenda was to check in with the Deeva as well as prepare for teaching the Fraidy Cat canvas. I'll report on it later. Thanks, Robin

Hi Everybody... Robin here... in Baltimore.

The flight from Memphis to Baltimore was bumpy but that didn't stop me from making Bullion Knots. I brought this Kathy Schenkel piece, "Mummy & Spider" as one of my travel pieces. Needlepoint Study Hall readers might remember it was mostly finished except for the Spider. Here's the link to Mr. Mummy goes to Nashville.

I think the Frosty Rays Spider Legs look nice. His body is stitched with Fuzzy Stuff. I changed up the original design to give him a red smiling mouth and pumped up the volume for his eyes. Remember... it's all about the EYES.

Team Deeva arrived at the hotel and finding a dinner location was next on the agenda. Greg, the Deeva's husband, picked a fabulous restaurant, G&M Restaurant and Lounge. OMG. What a night. It was packed; you could tell it was the place to be.

Our waitress recommended the crab cakes, and I am glad she did. I got a single crab cake (bigger than my fist, it was!) with cole slaw and french fries on the side. The bar has now been set for the ultimate crab cake. YUM.

Creepy Characters helpers

Hi Everybody... Robin here.

I have helpers. Good kitten helpers.

Lana and Leo are assessing the small Halloween Tree selected to travel to Baltimore for display in the NeedleDeeva room at TNNA/Fall Market. I also found my ORANGE mini-lights and my PURPLE mini-lights for decorating the display window. Plus, I am bringing my favorite Black Feather Wreath to also display the Creeps. I'll be posting photos once things are decorated.

The Ghost and the Skeleton arrived from the finishers yesterday. Once again, the workmanship from Elizabeth Turner Collection in Lexington, KY is awesome. All of my Creepy Characters are with me and ready to travel. Here is a quick photo of them. Both are stitched with the Neon Rays Plus NP300 Glow in the Dark. I'll be teaching the Skeleton at Ruth Schmuff's shop, Bedecked & Beadazzled, on Sunday. Looking forward to that experience, for sure.

My suitcase is packed. Carry-on bag is manageable. NOW, it's time to figure out what stitching to bring for airplane traveling. I will go through my other works in progress to see what is small enough for the trip. (Sure do with I had another Creepy Character to work on; they are just the right size.)

Here's one last photo. Pat took the pix of Leo and surprised me with it. He said, "Here's one you didn't know about." So true. I think it's one of my favorites. That's all for now. Next time it will be from Baltimore. Thanks, Robin

Creepy Characters stitch guide manual

I'm on the less than one week count down to Baltimore... 4 days, to be exact. I've got my teaching manual all ready to go and though I would share what I've been doing.

Needlepoint Study Hall readers might remember in the past I made individual manuals for each teaching piece.

This time I went LARGE. I've got a 2" wide 3-ring binder to house all of the 9 Creepy Characters stitch guides plus the 10th Character (Skeleton ND 0467-J) available through Ruth Schmuff/Bedecked & Beadazzled.

Then I purchased the Avery Ready Index Table of Contents Dividers 11135, 10-Tab Set, to separate each stitch guide. It worked out just fine because there were 10 pieces total. I used different fonts for each Creepy Character... setting a mood, if you will. I am most happy when I can do an art project.

And, I put the pages in sheet protectors. I love sheet protectors, don't you?

Well, back to my list of things to do; it's a long one, as you can imagine. I'm printing The Pumpkin (ND 0467-A) stitch guides because they are shipping to NeedleDeeva right after Baltimore. Be sure to tell your LNS you want to stitch the Creeps. Stitch one or stitch them all. You'll have fun. I know I did. Thanks, Robin

Elliot Stitch

Hi Everybody... Robin here.

I have the printer revving at high RPMs; printing the Creepy Characters stitch guides. I am bringing them with me to Baltimore for the TNNA Fall Market Cash & Carry. The Shop Owners are anxious to get the Creeps in their hands for their customers.

As I was reviewing each stitch guide, I came across the Elliot Stitch. Needlepoint Study Hall readers encouraged me to name a stitch after Elliot; this is the one I chose. It is on the light purple background for the Spider Queen (ND 0467-D). It is a nice stitch to use when there are dots with 2 canvas intersections between them.

Hope you are doing fine. I've been busy stitching the newest (#10) Creepy Character from NeedleDeeva for its debut at Ruth Schmuff's shop, Bedecked & Beadazzled, during my trip to Baltimore for TNNA Fall Market. OK... now to our topic, Insomnia. Luckily I don't have it, although if I did, I would make use of my time and get more stitching done. LOL. Here is a needlepoint titled, INSOMNIA, from artist Jeanju Clifton. I have a story about it (of course) so here goes.

Several years ago, Pat (my guy), photographer/owner of Business Visuals, photographed the original artwork for artist, Jeanju Clifton. The name of the piece was "Insomnia." When I saw the art, I said to myself, "This would be the best piece for needlepoint."

I asked Amy Bunger to create a Custom Stitch Guide for Insomnia (she did) and I stitched it. It is one of my cherished pieces because I brought it to needlepoint life. I even learned how to knit. I went to my local knit shop in Memphis called Yarniverse, and told them I had specific needs to learn how to knit. I brought in the Insomnia canvas and showed them where the knitting was going.

I learned on "average" knitting needles with "no big deal" yarn. Then, I applied my new skills (LOL... I can't talk and knit at the same time!) to the stitch guide suggested thread: Poppies by Gumnut Yarns. I used 0000 Bamboo Knitting Needles for the best size/proportion. (ooohwee... they were tiny!) Then, I cut the Bamboo Knitting Needles in half, glued a wooden bead, knitted half onto each stick, and placed them within her wire-wrapped hands so that Insomnia would be actually knitting the scarf. You know me... if you're gonna do it... do it right!

Insomnia is wearing a Chenille robe made of Colonial Knots. Her curler cap was Gathered Flair, and I even found a tiny curler to add for realism. Notice the Pearl Earring? Our lady is styling. And, ... each cat is wearing a knitted sweater. OMG. So funny.

Cute Models from NeedleDeeva

Here is a snippet of yesterday's temperatures in Memphis, TN. Ooohh wee... it's HOT. Today is supposed to be the same. Yeow!

So, I am staying indoors and doing Photoshop chores. I processed the NeedleDeeva models which Vicky De Angelis stitched. These Hearts are so cute. They each measure 2.5" W x 3.5" H on 18 mesh. I like the different ways they were finished: as a standing ornament, as a scissors case, and as a hanging ornament. The possibilities are endless. Each of them were finished by Elizabeth Turner Collection in Lexington, KY. (Yes, the very same people who finished the Creepy Characters. Wonderful people!)

If you've been following Vicky De Angelis' blog, Mostly Needlepoint, you saw a preview of the brand new... haven't been stitched yet... will be debuted in Baltimore at the TNNA Fall Market... NEW Hearts.
Same size. So cute. They each will come with Vicky De Angelis stitch guides, too.

The Photographer's Best Friend

It's the 300th blog posting for Needlepoint Study Hall blog. Who knew Peggy and I had so much to talk about?

I wear many hats: designing and managing websites, writing stitch guides, teaching and photography. Through all of those tasks, I had a constant companion... Elliot, the Cat.

Elliot loved to be in the spot light; the center of attention. So, when there was a needlepoint canvas or needlepoint model to be photographed, Elliot was right there. He liked the lights, the camera, and the action.

Glow in the Dark Threads

Hi Everybody... Robin here.

Ghost is finished. Here is your first viewing of him. He is the 6th character from NeedleDeeva's Creepy Characters club/series (ND 0467-F).

I used Glow in the Dark threads for each of the Creeps... except for The Devil. Mostly, I used the DMC Glow in the Dark E940 floss. It is a nice thread to use because it is stranded and works beautifully with the laying tool.

I've used other Glow in the Dark threads in the past. After all, my passion is Halloween.

Kreinik has a nice assortment; these are from my stash. Kreinik's Glow in the Dark collection is available in sizes 4, 8, 12, 16, 32, 1/8" ribbon, 1/16" ribbon and Blending Filament. Sweet!

Rainbow Gallery introduced their Neon Rays Plus Glow in the Dark NP300 at the Columbus Market. I was fortunate to stitch with it on the Ghost. YEOW! It's awesome. Works beautifully, too. Rainbow Gallery also has another Glow in the Dark thread called Zoo Eyes (Z001) for Needlepoint: 13-18 count or Cross Stitch: 7-11 count. The things I have learned while stitching the Creepy Characters!

Creepy Characters Group photos

Hi Everybody... Robin here.

I've been tying up loose ends from Market and began Phase Two of Creepy Characters deadlines. All stitch guides must be written and printed by July 31st. The Ghost must be stitched and sent off for finishing. Hooty Owl must leave the nest and fly to Oregon for his Needlepoint Now debut. Lots to do.

Yesterday, I photographed the Creeps both individually and as a group. The group shot is quite impressive, don't you think?

The ornaments were finished by Elizabeth Turner Collection in Lexington, KY. Boy, was I pleased. Each one has its own color of moire and twisted cord trim complimenting the piece. And, I LOVE the ribbon. ETC is the best!

It's a fun surprise when you turn the ornament over to see what color is on the backside. You can sign up with your local needlepoint shop to join the Creeps. You can stitch them all on a monthly plan or just pick out your favorites. I carried many of the threads from kit to kit. We've got over 30 participating Retailers and the list is growing. Driving through the SNOW

Hi Everybody... Robin here... back in Memphis.

Market was a wonderful experience. I treasure the opportunity to travel with Amy and Jill. On the drive home from Columbus to Memphis, I decided to stitch on the canvas from the Associated Talents' class I took on Sunday.

"Let it SNOW" is one of the Associated Talents seasonal message canvases. I know you have seen some of their other ones: Be Mine, Happy Halloween, Happy Easter... It is on 13 mesh and measures 8.5"W x 4.5"H. It comes with their stitch guide; Don's ideas are cuter than cute.

In class, I began stitching the background. Carol and Sandy taught an awesome technique for twisting & couching the DMC Memory Thread spelling out the "let it." Later that evening, I cut my lengths of Neon Rays and straightened them with my flat iron.

Stitching on the SNOW canvas was perfect for the drive home. The 13 mesh is very car friendly. Here's the game that I played. From Columbus to Cincinnati, I stitched on the S. Once we made it onto the other side of Cincinnati, I changed to the N. It didn't matter that I hadn't finished the S...
I was playing a game.

From Cincinnati to Louisville, I stitched on the N.

From Louisville to Nashville, I stitched on the O.

From Nashville to Memphis, I stitched on the W.

A 9-hour car ride was enjoyable and productive. Amy was productive, too. She stitched on both the H and the A of her upcoming THANKSGIVING banner for her Home Study.

Now, I am back home. Time to put SNOW down and pick up the Ghost. He is the last piece to stitch of the NeedleDeeva Creepy Characters series.
I took the finished models to the Rainbow Gallery booth to show Sally.
I asked her if Rainbow Gallery had any "glow in the dark" threads?
I was thinking about making the Ghost special but the inspiration hadn't appeared... until Sally said, "Yes, we have the NEW Neon Rays Plus Glow in the Dark thread." OMG. Can you believe that? I can't wait to use it.

Cats in Columbus

Hi Everybody... Robin here... in Columbus... Day 3.

Today was another fun day in the Deeva booth. More and more shop owners had thought about the Creepy Characters over night, and turned in their paperwork today to join the Club. Looks like the Deeva will be increasing the size of the upcoming Needlepoint Now magazine ad in order to list all of the participating Retailers.

I did sneak away to photograph some things with Amy and Jill. In the Maggie Co. booth, there was a new cat canvas which caught our attention. Love that comfy cat on the chair. But wait... have we seen it before?

Maggie said it was a new designer; not the same designer as the one I had stitched. Very interesting, don't you think? I'm having a déjà vu moment... how about you?

Sundance had the Lampwork Bead cat heads with painted canvas cat bodies. Too cute. Clever idea. I know not all people are cat lovers so thank you for allowing me to do so. It's been 3 days since I've hugged a cat.

Hi Everybody... Robin here... in Columbus... Day 2.

Oooweee! WHAT a day! My dogs are barking!

I was in the NeedleDeeva booth all day today. The time passed so quickly. People came in... two by two, even... with interest about the Creepy Characters. Many Needlepoint Stores are signing up. The Deeva is thrilled.

Today's show closed at 6PM. Tonight's rested evening was wonderful. We ordered a pizza and had Buckeye Crunch for dessert.

Buckeye Crunch? Have you heard about it? It's Peanut Butter & Chocolate Carmel Corn... OMG! I never knew that was possible. Jill and Amy stumbled upon it at the Krema Nut Company. They bought it, and we devoured it. A Columbus memory has been made.

Reporting from Columbus TNNA - Day 1

Hi Everybody... Robin here... in COLUMBUS!

Yes, Columbus, OHIO, at the TNNA Summer Market. Today I had the wonderful opportunity of helping NeedleDeeva set up their booth. Mainly, I stayed out of their way... but, I did get to help assemble their Sample It items: the new 3 Heart canvases plus Vicky De Angelis stitch guides in a cellophane bag with lime green tissue and purple ribbon. They were very popular; in fact, NeedleDeeva sold out. Way to go TEAM Deeva.

Sample It went from 5-6PM. The Needlepoint Showcase took place from 5-7PM. It was the Creepy Characters first debut. Elizabeth Turner Collection did the finishing. OMG... they exceeded my expectations... the Creeps look WONDERFUL. I highly recommend ETC for needlepoint finishing.

The Creepy Characters were placed on the Black Halloween Tree. Other small Halloween ornaments were added to fill out the tree. IMHO it was a show stopper! The signage board had eye-catching LED Blinking/Twinkling stars. There were compliments on my Apron, too.

I enjoyed talking to the interested Needlepoint Shop owners. I knew many of them from my previous TNNA teachings. They listened to my spiel but actually the finished models told the story. It was a good day in deed.

But, WAIT... there's MORE. Amy Bunger was awarded TNNA's prestigious TEN Award; (Tribute to Excellence in Needlearts.) We were very proud of Amy. I know she will have more to say about that moment in her July e-newsletter.

A. Bradley Needle Arts, Inc is introducing a new Cat Mini-Stockings line of canvases in addition to her new Dog Mini-Stockings at Columbus/TNNA. A few weeks ago, I sent Ashley a photo of Jules... just in case she would consider including a Calico cat in the new designs. Ashley admired Jules and painted her likeness to represent the Calicos. How fun is that.

Jules heard that I was going to the same place as Ashley Bradley. Jules is ready to go meet the needlepoint designer who took care to paint a pretty Calico. Silly Jules. Thanks, Robin

Creepy Characters Apron

Hi Everybody... Robin here.

I am almost ready to go to Columbus. Next on my list is to pack the suitcase and the needlepoint. After all, it is a Needlepoint convention, right? But first, I wanted to show you what I made yesterday.

I made a Creepy Characters apron! I am going to wear it when I stand with my NeedleDeeva Creepy Characters display during the Needlepoint Showcase on Friday evening. It's all about getting noticed... getting one's attention. Hopefully, the display (decorated Halloween tree), the signage and the Apron will get Needlepoint Shop owners' interest to sign up for the Creepy Characters Club.

I used the same graphics I created for the Creepy Characters Stitch Guides cover sheets, and printed the design onto the iron-on transfer paper. Be sure to Flip Horizontal or else your design will be backwards.

I am quite pleased with the outcome. I'm bringing the perfect Halloween earrings, too. I'll be posting from Market. Jill will, too. This should be fun. Wish me luck! Thanks, Robin

I wanted to share some fun news with you. BeStitched Needlepoint is now open. The owners are Jeannine and Lisa, and they are located in Scottsdale, Arizona. I have met both ladies; our friendships began on Stitcherie.ning.com.

I just called them to with them Best of Luck, and ordered a canvas for Wendy Harwood to design a Stitch Guide. How awesome is that! I will blog about it for sure.

Drakula from NeedleDeeva is finished!

Hi Everybody... Robin here.

I met all deadlines last night.

Finished Drakula at 8PM. Generated the FedEx air bill, typed the instructions letter to M's Canvashouse, and said "bon voyage" to my newest Creepy Character from NeedleDeeva. He arrives in Lexington today and begins his transformation into an ornament. He is so cute; I really fell for him. I had the best time designing his Halloween Couture cape and top hat. The bow tie really completes the ensemble. His eyes glow in the dark as well as those fangs. His eyeglasses are Kreinik Hot Wire, and again, I used the lasso technique.

I met another deadline, too. The new NeedleDeeva website went live yesterday. I re-vamped the site, and gave it that special touch which the Deeva deserves. Here's a screen shot of the home page. The website link is www.needledeeva.com

My last deadline was outputting Amy's e-newsletter June 2011. Got it done and it is now online. I slept good last night. Hmmm... I wonder why?

The last character in the NeedleDeeva Creepy Characters series is
Ghost (ND 0467-F). Right now, I am calling him Mr. Jazz Hands. LOL. He will be my traveling companion to the Columbus TNNA Market. I will stitch him in the car while Jill drives; Amy will be stitching her Thanksgiving Banner, too. What a scene that will be!

Today's list of things to do begins with tidying up all of the Creepy Characters threads. (Looks like a minor explosion happened as the deadlines were approaching!) Then, it's time to begin writing the Creepy Characters stitch guides. First will be Hooty because his information needs to be sent to Needlepoint Now. Second will be Fraidy Cat because I will be teaching his class at the TNNA Fall Market in Baltimore, MD in August 2011. The rest of the Characters will be done in alphabetical order.

Sorry to be so quiet. I'm still here. All is good. I've got a HUGE deadline to get Drakula finished and into tomorrow's FedEx to go to M's Canvashouse (Lexington, KY) for finishing to be ready in time to join me at the TNNA Market on June 09, 2011. Yikes!

These are exciting times. Drakula and all of the other Creepy Characters from NeedleDeeva are going to be revealed at the Columbus June TNNA Market. NeedleDeeva has already received wonderful signups from nationwide Retail Needlepoint Shops; each wanting to carry this club/series for their customers... and the "official" release hasn't even happened, yet. Good news travels fast.

The Creepy Characters will also be on display at the TNNA Needlepoint Showcase on Friday, June 10th for all to see. I've got choices to make: which Halloween Tree to bring? My Black Halloween Tree or my new Lime Green/Silver Glitter Halloween Tree? You know I will have my camera with me, and YOU will see which one was selected. I love having this blog as my voice to all of you... (thanks, Peggy!)

Another week has come and gone. Whew! What a busy time it is. Hope you are doing OK.

NeedleDeeva • Creepy Characters

Here's Hooty. He is all finished. He is one cute bird. There are sparkly threads and fuzzy ones, too. Beads and Ribbons; everything you would want for your Halloween festivities. With this Creepy Characters series, I have been carrying over threads from kit to kit... occasionally adding new threads for that WOW factor. I even used the DMC Glow in the Dark Floss E940 for his eyes. Spooky!

So far there are 8 Retail Shops across the USA going to carry this Club series. And, that's before the official TNNA Market/June 2011 push begins. We are glad for these shops and looking forward to more carrying the Creepy Characters canvases from NeedleDeeva.

The Mississippi River is Rising

The Mississippi River is expected to crest on Tuesday, May 10, 2011... at 48 Feet. (The 1937 flood was 48'7".) Here is another "before" picture which Pat took when he was photographing the Tom Lee Memorial.

Here is the "current" picture; taken by Dan Price and Facebook posted by John Underwood and Frank Inderbitzen. And, we're not done, yet. Good thing they did decide to move the BBQ contest to higher ground.

Hope everyone is having a Happy Mother's Day. Today I will treat myself to some stitching time and finish Hooty. Here's a preview. He is one cute bird.
